Hmm... like most grunge bands, they have five worthwhile songs at most. Fortunately they haven't been as highly raved about as Nirvana in recent years, so they weren't completely ruined, but I can't think of anything other than the (admittedly good) Would?, Bleed the Freak, Nutshell and Down in a Hole which I'd bother giving a second listen... Maybe get a greatest hits by them, but don't go any further than that.

Alice In Chains got pushed into the grunge scene by their label. It wasn't a good fit as AIC was more metallic than alternative. They had some good songs in their heyday and provided some relief from Pearl Jam and Nirvana.

I can't say I've ever "followed" this band, but a friend who was more in tune with contemporary groups than I gave me a cassette tape with a sampling from various bands (this was the mid or late 90's). I heard the song "Junkhead", asked him, "Who in the hell is that?" and immediately went out and bought the CD. I've bought nothing else that AIC have done, but they performed some chilling, extraordinary music...at least on the "Dirt" CD they did. The song "Dirt" isn't up to the Stooges song of the same name that appeared on their ground-breaking "Funhouse" album, but it's a classic all the same, capturing the same sort of dark, miasmic mood. "Rooster" got its share of radio airplay (which means overplay) but it hasn't grown stale or any less evocative; if anything, it's a song that's gotten better with age. This is one of those rare CD's where even the "lesser" songs stand out in the memory (by the way, it's a great CD to work out to).

Not a huge fan of AIC, but I really like Man IN A Box and Rooster!!! The lead man Layne Staley succomed to the wild and wreckless and careless lifestyle of many Seattle rockers(Kurt Cobain). They probobly would still remain one of the most popular bands to this day had this not occured.

The Best grunge band out of seattle (next to soundgarden of course) and it has everything nirvana does not, substance, better lyrics and better music, they were more metal then grunge.

Layne Staley R.I.P.

one of the all time greatest and they never sold out just to get airplay yet they were(are) huge who would not want jerry cantrell to play guitar for them now his riffs and layne voice the way he sang their songs was unique and to his credit (unfortunatly) he died doing what he claimed to love so much unlike almost every piece of crap that is out now(and then)and dont forget the rest of the band the drummer although it doesnt sound to diificult try playing their music the way they play and you will realise how great they were, as a whole. one very talented group of musicians, you might not like what they are on about in their lyrics but their musical talent was insurpassable by most.(and still is).

My goodness! How could you not think that this band was a gift from the Music Gods??!! Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley's haunting lyrics.... Alice in Chains was a mind-blowing, soul-touching, and sweetly pain ridden. I could listen to the lonely hurt in Laynes voice for days upon end. Every day that I turn on the readio and here more of the Bullsh#t crappy conveyor belt music I miss people like Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain, Andrew Wood, Shannon Hoon and the others that have passed.

at a time when 80's hair metal was huge, alice in chains started playing there style. It was revolutionary for what was being pressed into MTV and kids heads at the time. They were the Beatles of the 90's. You can kill a revolutionary, but you cant kill a revolution. Alice in Chains is responsible for everything you hear today. everything.

I think Alice in Chains were one of the greatest hard rock acts of the past 20 years. Layne Staley was truly an original voice, and perhaps one of the quintessential voices of his generation. Label AIC as grunge, metal or whatever, but the music this band made is timeless. Staley and singer/guitarist Jerry Cantrell were awesome songwriters, and their vocal harmonies were like nothing else in music at the time, actually like nothing since Crosby, Stills and Nash. A great band with a great sound that will sadly never be again. R.I.P. Layne.

One of the best heavy bands ever. Each album is radically different than the others, but all of them are strong. On one end of the spectrum they churned out the powerful grind of Dirt, then they gifted us with the acoustic masterpieces Jar of Flies and Sap.Stahley was an outstanding singer. What a shame he is gone.I was lucky enough to see them live at lollapalooza:they definately delivered the goods live.

Alice In Chains is probably one of the misunderstood bands of the grunge era. But they are also the creators of Would?, Rooster, Say Goodbye Don't Follow, Them Bones, and other icons of modern rock music. They will always hold a special place in my vault of favorite disbanded rock groups

When Jar of Flies came out, I was probably 10 yrs old. I had no idea what rock music was until I heard Nutshell. It is the best Alice in Chains song ever. All of their songs are awesome, but that one just hits me emotionally. In all of the songs he wrote you can just listen to him sing about addiction. I think that is why I love Nutshell so much. I can feel his pain, and that is when I know I have found true music.

Alice in Chains is a band I have only recently discovered; I wish that I had known it sooner, before Layne passed away. They brought the angst-laden grunge rock movement of the early-mid 90s to great heights, and were more than just a heavy metal band: their mellower EPs, Jar of Flies and Sap, are full of interesting and moving compositions. Great emotion, great music.

For those who were born in the in the 80's AIC put more than 3 CDs!!! Another thing, Lane may have have been a drug addict, but if you listen to music, watch tv, play video games or anything that helps you escape realty then you are no different! Lane's music should appreciated. He did a project in 1995 with the lead guitarist of Pearl Jam (Mcready) they're band was called Mad Season, popular song River of Deceit. That song was written by Lane and was about his own addiction. They could not continue because the bassist died. Lane knew he had a problem. He was also a visual artist and did the artwork on the cover of the cd. There was more to Lane Staley than a needle. And another thing. There is not a band around and never has been that sounds anything like ALICE IN CHAINS! The People who think so cannot hear! I was born in 1967 and have always listen to heavy metal music. At ten I was listening Iron Butterfly and Led Zeppelin. I know that the fastest guitar player in the world is the GREAT KAT a female who invented a type of music called Cyber Speed. Music will never be the same without Lane Staley. AIC was NEVER overshadowed NIRVANA, NIRVANA was good, but they were more teenie boppers, hince the song Teen Spirit. Then There AIC and Man in the Box. I see no likeness sorry.

I have never seen AIC as grunge. It appeard more as slow dark metal. Whatever you call, most of their work was excellent. Instrumentally, the sound was very low but still melodic, hard , and intreguing. Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell together as vocalist created a hypnotic sound that was almost angel like (very differnt for this type of music). Though a good content of their lyrics delt with the lows and dark side of life, it went onto differnt subject matter as love, war (Rooster), make believe, etc. It's a shame the band deteriorated the way it did. Despite that fact, they created amazing music that will never be forgotten.

When you consider this group, and others like Mudhoney and Soundgarden, it's a wonder that grunge made the impact it did. This is just loud, irritating drooler rock that takes itself too seriously. Poorly played and realized. Notable for its slow, syrupy melodramatic riffs and moronic hooks. This is music that should have been deconstructed and shipped off to Who Knows Where.

Didn't consider them all that great when grunge was in... Now that it no longer is, I like them even less. A couple of decent songs, but I saw them live once opening for Van Halen and they SUCKED! This band was the best out of the seattle grunge with their dark and broodingly astic sound. But often times the artists lifestyles conflict with being able to hold what they've established together. Lyne's pain is clearly reflected in the dark and depressing lyrics. Don't listen to it too many times in a row or you'll get depressed too.

What set AiC apart from all the other poseur metal bands of the time was their songwriting talent. Cantrell was a great and innovative guitarist and Staley completed the band with his thought-provoking lyrics and soaring voice. These traits would seem like obvious requirements that any band should have but sadly, almost every band today lacks them except for Creed. It's hard to say out loud and admit, but since '96, the hard rock scene has dried up and may never return to the glory days of '83-'93. AiC and hard rock R.I.P. (btw, they only get 4 out of 5 stars because they couldn't keep the group together after a mere 3 albums)
